Pride Month: Favorite Characters Part 3: Iceman (Bobby Drake)

Bobby Drake is a mutant, with the ability to control ice, earning him the codename Iceman. He is an Omega level mutant, meaning that regarding his power, he is the most powerful in the world. He can even cover his entire body with ice and create ice bridges to assist in travel.

Bobby was one of the original X-Men recruited by Professor X. He was also the youngest. He formed a fast friendship with Beast (Hank McCoy) and was the only one who was unimpressed when the first female member,  Jean Grey, joined the team. While Cyclops (Scott Summers), Angel (Warren Worrington III) and Beast were all immediately smitten with her, Iceman instead said "A girl...big deal."

Iceman continued with the X-Men for several years, until he and the rest of the team were captured by the living planet Krakoa. When Professor X assembled a new team to rescue them, Bobby, Hank, and Warren all "graduated" and left the X-Men. Bobby and Warren would soon help found the Champions, along with Black Widow, Ghost Rider, and Hercules. Eventually, Bobby would be reunited with the other original X-Men members and help found X-Factor. All five original X-Men would eventually rejoin the team.

Iceman's powers would continue to get stronger over the years, especially after Emma Frost helped him unlock some of his abilities. Fellow X-Man Northstar (Jean-Paul Beaubier) was out and proud and was shown to have a deep attraction to Bobby (as did many other characters). However, Jean-Paul was rebuffed, as Bobby claimed he was not gay.

At some point the younger versions of the original five X-Men found out how horrible things have become for mutantkind. So they traveled into the future to prevent this from happening. Therefore, there were two versions of Iceman, Beast, Angel, Jean Grey, and Cyclops walking around. It was at this time that young Jean reached into Bobby's mind and made him confront the realization that he was gay. Eventually young Iceman talked it out with older Iceman and Bobby admitted he was gay, but had been afraid to come out of the closet. Both Bobbys would have relationships with boyfriends, but none seemed to last long. The young versions of the X-Men would eventually have their minds wiped of everything (to prevent messing up the timeline) and were returned back to their own time.

Mutantkind currently have a safe haven on Krakoa, where Bobby has served faithfully, even joining a revamped Marauders at one point. What the future holds for Bobby is uknown, but he won't have to hide who he is anymore.
